The principles followed by Taoist health preservation are: first, the combination of health preservation and nature, so that health preservation and spiritual form are unified. Therefore, the Taoist theories of “double cultivation of life and life” and “co-cultivation of spirit, qi and spirit” have formed the Taoist health preservation system.
In the previous article on Taoism, I talked about practicing exercises to promote physical health and prolong life. In this one, I will continue to talk about the principles of nourishing the mind, nourishing the nature, and nourishing the spirit.
A core of Chinese Taoism is the longing for “immortality”. Based on this thought, the Taoist research on health preservation and the pursuit of health preservation were formed. The health-preserving spells spread by Taoism have also formed an important source of health-preserving history in ancient China. In the long history of the Chinese nation for thousands of years, the Taoist theory of health preservation and health preservation methods are still shining with the dazzling light of national heritage.
If people want to live a long life, they should love the air, respect the heavens, and focus on the essence.
The health preservation advocated by Taoism mainly focuses on eating and drinking, nourishing the breath (divided into static and dynamic exercises), medicinal herbs, and swordsmanship. And nourishing the breath to cultivate the spirit by stillness and cultivate the form by movement, also has a major position in the whole Taoist health preservation.
The combination of essence, qi, and spirit is the purpose of Taoism to cultivate one’s body, nourish the mind, and strengthen the body, in order to prolong life and prolong life. The “Tai Ping Jing” says: “Those who want to live a long life should love the energy, respect the heavens, and value the essence.”
1. The purpose of nourishing the heart, making it just, kind, true and quiet
Nurturing the heart is the purpose of Taoist health. The “Enlightenment of Truth” says: “The human being is the pivot of the Tao.” Lao Tzu’s efforts to “achieve the extreme of emptiness, keep quiet and earnest” are all the mottos of the Tao of nourishing the heart. Therefore, the purpose of health preservation is to nourish the heart. A biased heart, nurture it to make it right. Evil heart, nurture it to make it good. A floating heart, nurture it to make it still. A false heart, nurture it to make it true. Greedy heart, raise it to make it public. A treacherous heart, nurture it to make it good. Those who are good at maintaining health cultivate people’s justice, kindness, truth, quietness, calm mind, and bright actions. Zhuangzi said: “Use your heart like a mirror, you should not hurt anything.” When the mind is regular, the mind is clear; when the mind is clear, the mind is peaceful;
2. The essence of nurturing one’s nature is to be quiet and inaction
The essence of Taoist health preservation is to cultivate nature. Lu Dongbin said: “To refine life, you must first refine your nature, refine your essence, and refine your spirit. All of these are the cardinals.” Therefore, the essence of Taoism’s cultivation of nature lies in “purity and inaction”. Therefore, the “double cultivation of life and life” is based on nourishing the nature. To nurture one’s nature is to seek tranquility and concentration. “Historical Records: The Biography of Lao Zhuang Shen Han” says: “Lao Tzu is more than a hundred years old, or more than two hundred years old, and his longevity is also due to his cultivation of Taoism.” It can be seen that the way to maintain health is all about nourishing nature. “Zhou Yi Shen Tong Deed” says: “Nurture the desire to nourish the nature and prolong the life.” Therefore, nourishing the nature and maintaining health, prolonging the life and prolonging the life are interdependent. The foundation of health preservation is to cultivate the nature as the first. Endure anger and resentment while nourishing nature, nourishing it in the form. Cultivating morality and nourishing nature, nourishing it lies in life. Those who are good at health cultivation cultivate people’s essence, qi, spirit, heart, shape, and life. Their hearts will be at ease, their bodies will be healthy, their nature will be cultivated to the state of “purity and inaction”, and their lifespan will naturally be extended.
3. The way of nourishing the mind, so that the mind can be united and rooted for each other
Retreating the spirit is the essence of Taoist health. “Spiritual Nervousness” says: “If the body and mind are one, then it is the true God.” To make the body and spirit depend on each other, so that the mind and spirit can communicate, this is the highest state of Taoist health preservation. Keeping the spirit alive is the most important thing. Preserve your energy, the foundation of resting your mind. Harmonious breath, the foundation of nourishing spirit. Cultivation of temperament, the source of spirituality. Righteousness, the root of health. Temperance of the seven emotions, the way of resting the spirit. Strengthening the body, the method of resting the spirit. The Taoist way of health preservation is to be good at cultivating the mind, so that the mind and spirit are united, and each other is the root and each other is nourished. The way of health preservation is nurtured in it.
