Step Ahead: Time for Your Chinese Intelligence

Nowadays, the Chinese language is becoming more and more popular and closer to the working language not only in the European business community, but is rapidly moving into common speech around the world. Today we will together understand some of the structural and informative reasons for such popularity and outline the prospects for everyone who wants to master this wonderful and ancient language in the sphere of business and everyday social life.

Chinese is one of the oldest and most beautiful languages in the world. The Reform of Opening Up has made Western languages and cultures continue to be popular in China. That made foreigners learn Chinese in its place of origin.

In studying Mandarin, some even study calligraphy, Chinese has become a popular language in the world, and a trend of learning Chinese has begun to appear in more and more places.

1. Large number of users

According to United Nations statistics, there are 6 billion people in the world , more than 200 countries and regions, and more than 2500 ethnic groups. There are 5,651 languages that have been identified . The six major languages of the United Nations are: 1 English, 2 Chinese, 3 German, 4 French, 5 Russian, 6 Spanish. The most populated languages are: Chinese, English, Hindi, Spanish, Arabic, German, Russian, French, Bengali, Portuguese, etc. There are 1.6 billion Chinese speakers , accounting for 25% of the world’s total population .

2. Chinese characters are stable, have a long history and strong cultural heritage.

Chinese characters are characters that last for five thousand years. Although many dialects of Chinese are formed due to the differences in phonetics, they do not affect the understanding of written Chinese characters between people.

Chinese is a relatively convergent and stable language. This enables the inheritance and development of ancestral wisdom and civilization. Nowadays Chinese students can also read the Chu poems by the poet Qu Yuan from 2000 years ago.

English is a divergent and unstable language. English spelling was only unified 400 years ago, and English graduates still have difficulties in reading Shakespeare’s original works 300 years ago.

3. Few Chinese characters ( 3500 commonly used characters ), strong word formation, and large amount of information

Now, the English vocabulary has exceeded 1 million, and ordinary people can never remember them in their entire lives. According to the “New York Times” statistics, there are still 10,000 to 20,000 new words produced in English every year . The new English vocabulary has very little connection with the original vocabulary. This is how millions of English words come out. In Chinese, there is no need to create new characters, only new words in existing Chinese character groups. And all English vocabulary and new words can be expressed in 3,500 Chinese characters.

The ability of Chinese characters to form words is too strong, and it can be used by analogy, and the amount of memory is greatly reduced. The famous scholar Ji Xianlin said: “Chinese is the most concise language in the world. It also expresses the same meaning. If English takes 60 seconds, Chinese takes 5 seconds.”

In English-speaking countries, people don’t want to read newspapers without 20,000 words, and don’t want to read “Time” weekly without 30,000 words. Professionals who have graduated from university for 10 years generally have to understand 80,000 words.

And the Chinese character literacy standard is 1,500 characters. Science and engineering college students generally master 3,500 Chinese characters, so it’s no problem to do scientific research. As for reading and reading newspapers, you can do it after graduating from elementary school. Most people can read and write 2000 Chinese characters.

4. Chinese vocabulary is extremely rich and easy to express

Chinese vocabulary is very rich. For example, “look” has many expressions: look, glance, aim, read, peep, squint, look, look down, look up, look forward to, etc., as well as stare and so on. In addition, watching, appreciating, scouting, censoring, checking, etc., all have the meaning of watching.

The English vocabulary to express a certain meaning is very rare.

5. Chinese is strong, incisive, precise and easy to understand.

The thoughts expressed in English can be found in the corresponding Chinese expressions; while the thoughts expressed in Chinese may not be able to find the corresponding English expressions.

It is easier to translate foreign language works into Chinese, and there are fewer foreign words. Generally speaking, one of their words can be translated into Chinese with many words. The process of translation is also a creative process. The same sentence in a foreign language is not the same when translated into Chinese. After the same piece of foreign literature is translated into Chinese, there is a big difference. The translation of Chekhov’s “Chameleon” by Ru Long is very different from that of Huang Zhirui. Maupassant’s “Necklace” translated by Fu Lei is also different from Wang Zhensun’s translation. The reason is simple, because the vocabulary of Chinese is too rich.

However, translating Chinese into English is relatively difficult. After translating into a foreign language, some are not so accurate, and some translations do not match the original meaning of Chinese. Some poems and idioms cannot even be translated, and they make jokes. “One two to three o’clock ice cold wine, hundreds of thousands of lilac flowers”; “Zhanjiang Port is full of clear waves, Bohai Bay is turbulent”; “Empty and lonely house, widows living in a comfortable homestay, swiftly speaking, “Meeting Encounters, Encountering Lost Ways” and so on. These couplets related to Chinese characters are difficult to translate in English.

6. Chinese pronunciation is scientific, and Chinese thinking is fast.

The pronunciation of Chinese is 3~7 times that of English . Studies have shown that it takes about 1/4 second for an ordinary person to make a voice , and the speed of thinking in Chinese is faster than in English. Mandarin Chinese has 20 initials, 39 vowels and 4 tones, and the result of multiplication is about 3000 sounds. 2500 voices can be used, and 1200 voices are commonly used to pronounce each for just 1/4 second.

There are 20 vowels and 20 consonants in English without tones. Therefore, the types of sounds in English will not exceed 20 × 20 = 400 . In other words, if one voice corresponds to one thing, then 400 voices in English can only express 400 things. This is 400 more things than things, if you want to express, can only rely on repeated sound of the job, with 2 or 2 expression more than sound. It can be seen that native English speakers need 2 voices to express the 401st thing, which takes 1/2 second.

Chinese mathematics is a single syllable pronunciation, so Chinese responds to numbers faster than English.

7. Chinese characters are a perfect combination of sound, form and meaning.

Chinese characters are two-dimensional information that combines sound, form and meaning. Chinese characters have the greatest expressive power in a flat space (paper), so Chinese characters are more convenient to read. You can capture their characteristics and map their meaning at a glance. It is the advanced level of text. form.

English is a one-dimensional cipher information, which has no ideographic ability and is not intuitive. It is only a sound symbol and a low-level form of text.

The two-dimensional nature of Chinese characters determines the diversity and flexibility of its input methods, and it can inspire people’s pioneering spirit and display wisdom more than one-dimensional boring password-style English.

8. Chinese is rich in derivation.

The writing of Chinese characters can also be said to be an artistic creation. Chinese calligraphy is extensive and profound, with a long history. A calligraphy work or a character is of great value. I once saw a calligrapher make a picture of the middle hall. It was a big “crane”, but it looked like a painting when a standing crane was dancing.

Chinese forms of rhyme poems, verses, yuanqu, zaju, cross talk, local drama, lantern riddles, etc., as well as rhetorical techniques such as phonetic puns, semantic puns, and allegorical words, add infinite charm to Chinese.

Now, the speed of Chinese input to the computer is faster than that of English, and the advantage of voice input is greater. In particular, computers will enter the two- and three-dimensional era, and Chinese will increasingly show its advantages!

Once upon a time, it was popular in society that ” if you can’t learn English well and you can’t go abroad”, but now it is “learn Mandarin well and you are not afraid to travel all over the world”. Chinese has become popular in the world. Language, don’t we pay attention to children’s Mandarin and eloquence education earlier? Chinese fever is becoming popular, don’t let your children lose at the starting line again!
